What is Karenza?

"Karenza" is a term used by practitioners of the various Filipino martial arts to descibe the regular practice of movement and technique. No two Artist's Karenza are the same. In fact, no two Karenza sessions are ever the same. Karenza is the honest, solitary expression of a movement specialist's Personal Artistry, playing out in real time. 

Karenza can look fast, with weapons whirling like a blender. It can look slow, with the fluidity and grace of Tai Chi or Ballet. Similar to the Boxer training rounds of "Shadow Boxing", Karenza can look like a focused workout or simulated fight. For others still, it is a personal practice in Movement and Mindfulness, a kind of dynamic warrior-yoga that attunes the body with the mind, and readies the spirit for the day ahead.

At C&K, we believe the daily practice of Karenza is as vital to the morning's rituals as that first cup of coffee. As such, Martial Artists all over the world now start their day -- sometimes together, online or in person -- with a hot cup of their favorite coffee, and some healthy movement.

The Team

Coffee & Karenza (C&K) is owned by Aaron Davis of Southampton, UK, and Kurt Cornwell of Detroit, USA. Both are lifelong martial artists and coffee snobs. Their partnership was inevitable.

C&K was conceived and founded by Aaron as a celebration of the daily practice and simple joy of Karenza and a hot cup of coffee. This was a morning ritual he and many others cherished for many years. However, during the Covid-19 Global Quarantine, the daily start with coffee and karenza became something even more important, offering a shared respite from the stress of locked-down living for countless martial artists and everday people all over the world.

Always one to rally people together in the spirit of both family and training, Aaron looked at what he and others were doing to thrive, gave it a name, and in doing so, connected a world of movers and shakers.

Kurt is involved in many artistic and media projects in the martial art community worldwide, including design (like our products here), authorship and publishing, public speaking (TEDx UCLA), and video production. He is to blame for most of our stunningly-beautiful design aesthetic, and for writing this sentence.

Aaron and Kurt are also martial art brothers, as both are owners of official MKG Martial Art gyms in Southampton and Detroit respectively, as well as the many others affiliations and associations they share in the martial art world.

Their training partnership and business partnership, like the arts they train, is multi-national, as is Coffee & Karenza.

C&K apparel is, first and foremost, about expressing Aaron and Kurt's gratitude for this art, for it's many artists, and for that first cup of coffee.
